The Canadian Association of Theatre Research has gone through several name and mandate changes since its founding in 1976 as the Association for Canadian Theatre History and a subsequent name change to the Association for Canadian Theatre Research. In the 1990s, it changed to its current name. Originally founded to make studies in the history of Canadian theatre a credible academic pursuit, it now brings together scholars, students, theatre professionals, and others interested in Canadian theatre.
Its current mandate is to support its network of members to research all aspects of Canadian theatrical history and contemporary practice as well as to promote public awareness of theatre and drama within Canada’s cultural scene.
The Association holds an annual conference and publishes the scholarly journal Theatre Research in Canada / Recherche du Theatre au Canada and a newsletter for its members.
