This theatre was ounded in 1979 by Cynthia Grant, Kim Renders, Mary Vingoe and Maureen White, who had a vision for a different kind of theatre based on a collaborative working mode and a shared imagistic based-aesthetic. Although they did not initially call themselves a women’s theatre company, the strong female-centered consciousness was evident in their work. Nightwood Theatre is the oldest professional women's theatre company in Canada. It is the nationally recognized forum for the creation of original plays written and directed by women with different economic, racial, national, sexual and social backgrounds. It has produced such well-known productions as Good Night Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) by Ann-Marie MacDonald, Harlem Duet by Djanet Sears, and Princess Pocahontas and the Blue Spots by Monique Mojica.
Materials in the fonds pertain to the administration, operation, and creation of Nightwood Theatre productions.
