From 1971-1984, the Playwrights Union of Canada went through many changes. in 1971, it was called the Playwrights Circle but soon changed to the Playwrights Co-op in 1972, when it started publishing Canadian works. By 1979, it became Playwrights Canada and a number of its members founded the Guild of Canadian Playwrights in order to protecrt Canadian works and improve the status of Canadian Playwrights in Canada and abroad. By 1984, the Co-op and Guild came together to form the Playwrights Union of Canada but its name was changed again in 2002, to Playwrights Guild of Canada, which it still goes by.
It negotiates with the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and does a variety of printing, having been incorporated as a for-profit publishing company in 2002, including magazine articles, play publishing, and catalogue producing.
