Abstract
Archie Thomas always wanted to be a farmer. His parents encouraged him to continue his education, which he did, graduating from the Ontario Agricultural College in 1937. He was a recipient of a Thomas G. Wilson scholarship. Tuition at that time was $20.00. And room, board and laundry for a week was $3.50. There were 118 students in his class of ’37.
Archie was an athletic star. He was also a coach on one of the International Intercollegiate judging teams with Professor Knox which went to Chicago.
The Chamber of Commerce in London supported a potato club to which Archie and his brother belonged. He entered competitions and met many of the agricultural representatives, at that time, who encouraged the young farmers. This connection led to his becoming interested in 4H. Archie was one of the founding leaders of the Guelph Township Calf Club, and served 13 years as a 4H Club leader.
Mr. Thomas managed his uncle’s farm raising shorthorns.
