Study breaks can improve your learning
As you prepare for your exams, we want to remind you of the importance of taking study breaks. “Taking a break after a long period of sitting at a computer not only helps our bodies feel better but can also help us learn better," said Joannah O’Hatnick, manager, Writing & Learning Services. “Taking breaks can strengthen memories, enhance productivity, and improve motivation. Try taking a one-to-five-minute break, where you stretch your body and remove yourself from technology, for every 30 minutes of studying.”
Opportunities and activities to take study breaks at that library this semester
Starting Monday, April 7, we’ll have some activities set-up for you on the library’s first floor. We hope they’ll encourage you to take some time to slow down and give your mind a rest. Be sure to check out:
- The Activity Table: A table set-up with activity books, colouring utensils, and takeaway items.
- The Worry Box: A place to write down your worries and drop them in a box—hoping the act of writing them down and dropping them somewhere will feel like a symbolic act of release.
- The Affirmation Station: A bulletin board where you can pin an affirmation for you and your peers to read. You’re welcome to take one that speaks to you as well.
If you’re studying at the library, you may find a surprise! We’ll be hiding postcards filled with messages of encouragement from library staff and a coupon for a free coffee and a muffin at the library’s Starbucks.
Study break events happening at the library this semester
We’ll also have two study break events happening. Both will be located on the first floor.
Coffee, Tea, and Healthy Snacks – Wednesday, April 9, from 9 a.m. (until supplies run out)
- Grab a warm beverage and a snack on your way into the building and take some time to enjoy it before you begin your study session.
Scoop & Soothe Bar with the Central Students Association – Thursday, April 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Enjoy a sweet scoop of ice cream and build your own treat with our toppings bar — because nothing says chill like dessert during crunch time!
